Medical Relocation · Guide
Choosing a neighborhood by commute
When you're relocating for a medical role, the commute isn't just a convenience question. It's a quality-of-life question. Shift work, call schedules, and winter driving all change the math.

Start from the hospital, not the house
Everything radiates from where you'll work. Michigan Medicine's main campus sits on the northeast side of Ann Arbor; Trinity Health St. Joseph Mercy is east toward Ypsilanti. Before we look at a single listing, I map your likely commute at the hours you'll actually drive it. 6 a.m. on a January Tuesday is a different trip than Sunday afternoon. Tell me your shift pattern and I'll be honest about which towns stay easy and which ones get old by February.
Drive, bus, or bike: know all three
Most physician families drive, but it's worth knowing the alternatives. Ann Arbor's bus system (AATA/TheRide) serves the medical campus well from many neighborhoods, a real option for a partner who works downtown or at the university. And if you're a cyclist, the Border-to-Border Trail puts several neighborhoods within a genuinely pleasant bike commute of the hospitals. I've ridden most of these routes; ask me which ones hold up in winter.
Weigh the commute against life outside work
This is the part people get backwards. They optimize for eight minutes off the drive and end up somewhere that doesn't fit the rest of their life. A 20-minute commute from Dexter, with its small town, river, and trails, beats a 10-minute commute to a neighborhood you don't love, especially when you're working the hours physicians work. Home should be the place that restores you. The commute just has to be tolerable; the neighborhood has to be right.
How the towns stack up (roughly)
- Ann Arbor: shortest commutes to Michigan Medicine; priciest; walkable.
- Ypsilanti: 15 minutes east; closest to St. Joe's; most affordable; eclectic.
- Dexter: ~20 minutes northwest; small-town river life; easy drive in.
- Saline: ~15 minutes south; quiet, close-knit; straightforward commute.
- Chelsea: ~25 minutes west; historic small town; fine for day shifts, think twice for frequent call.
- Whitmore Lake: ~20 minutes north; lake living; check winter road conditions on your route.
Commute times are approximate and depend on your route and hours.
Bottom line: give me your workplace and your hours, and I'll show you the neighborhoods where the commute disappears into the background, so you can choose based on the life you want, not the drive you fear.
Common questions
I'm moving to Ann Arbor for a Michigan Medicine residency. Where should I live?
It depends on your hours and priorities: Ann Arbor proper offers the shortest commutes; Ypsilanti is closest to St. Joseph Mercy and most affordable; Dexter, Saline, and Chelsea are 15 to 25 minutes out with small-town character. Share your workplace and shift pattern with your agent to narrow it fast.
Can you commute by bike to Michigan Medicine?
Yes. The Border-to-Border Trail and Ann Arbor's bike-lane network put several neighborhoods within a genuinely pleasant bike commute of the medical campus. Many locals ride year-round.
How far is Dexter from the University of Michigan hospital?
About 20 minutes by car northwest of Ann Arbor: an easy commute for day shifts. Discuss call schedules with your agent if you'll be driving in at night.
